An ankle-foot orthosis (AFO), also known as below-the-foot support, is a device (usually plastic) used to control the position and motion of the ankle in patients with weakness or to correct ankle deformities.

The AFO wraps around the ankle and extends down to the foot, providing a secure fit, maintaining proper alignment, and preventing further injury or discomfort. The AFO helps control and stabilize the ankle joint, limiting unwanted motion and preventing the foot from rolling inward or outward excessively. With proper fitting and therapy, an AFO allows patients to resume their daily activities (e.g. walking) independently.
