Circumcision is the surgical removal of the skin covering the tip of the penis. The procedure is fairly common for newborn boys in certain parts of the world, including in Pakistan where male circumcision is considered an essential religious practice. Newborn circumcision is often done in the hospital nursery, usually within a couple of days after birth.
Increasing evidence has linked male circumcision to lower rates of urinary tract infections, especially during infancy, and to a lower risk of sexually transmitted diseases, notably human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
