Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used for the removal of a diseased gallbladder. This procedure is performed to treat gallstones, which are hard deposits that can form in the gallbladder and cause abdominal pain, inflammation, and other complications. The incidence of gallstones increases with an increase in age, with females more likely to form gallstones than males.

During a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, several small incisions are made in the abdomen to insert a laparoscope to visualize the surgical site, and then specialized instruments are used to cut and remove the gallbladder.
