A total knee replacement (TKR) is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint in order to relieve pain and disability of osteoarthritis, old injury, old recovered infections, and rheumatoid arthritis.
During a TKR, the damaged bone and cartilage at the end of the thigh bone and shinbone are removed. An implant is then placed on the knee to create a new joint surface. This implant functions similarly to a normal knee.
