Transurethral resection of the prostate (i.e. TURP) is an endoscopic procedure done to relieve symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, that involves cutting away a section of the prostate. When the prostate gland is enlarged, it can press against the urethra and interfere with or block the passage of urine out of the body.

Enlargement of the prostate is a common part of aging, producing symptoms mostly after 50 years of age. TURP is frequently performed in the geriatric population and is a gold standard for elderly patients.
