Learning Objectives:
At the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Have Knowledge of pleural diseases, including management, indications of intervention, and referral criteria
- Diagnose pneumothorax, including tension pneumothorax, pleural effusion, empyema, hemothorax.
- Perform tube thoracostomy safely
- Identify and deal with complications.

- Anatomy and physiology: Dr Sheeraz Siddiqui, Dr Nazish Iftikhar
- Approach to a patient with pleural effusion: (Indus hospital guidelines); Role of aspiration, biopsy, pigtail, chest tube (Dr Sohail Akhtar)
- Empyema/parapneumonic effusion, TB, Malignancy, other types of effusions: Dr Saima Saeed
- Pneumothorax: (Indus hospital guidelines): Dr Mujahid Hussain
- Tube thoracostomy; chest tube gone wrong: Dr Syed Ali Naqi
- Post-procedural care (Dr. Nazish)
- The ‘difficult’ chest tube (Dr. Sheeraz Siddiqui)
- Radiology (CXR, U/S, CT scan) in pleural diseases: Dr Kashif Shazlee
Hands On:
- Chest tube insertion and drain management: GS/Pulmonology
- Ultrasound for pleural effusion: Radiology
- Pleural biopsy with Abram’s needle: Pulmonology
