Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

1. Have Knowledge of pleural diseases, including management, indications of intervention, and referral criteria
2. Diagnose pneumothorax, including tension pneumothorax, pleural effusion, empyema, hemothorax.
3. Perform tube thoracostomy safely
4. Identify and deal with complications.

1. Anatomy and physiology: Dr Sheeraz Siddiqui, Dr Nazish Iftikhar
2. Approach to a patient with pleural effusion: (Indus hospital guidelines); Role of aspiration, biopsy, pigtail, chest tube (Dr Sohail Akhtar)
3. Empyema/parapneumonic effusion, TB, Malignancy, other types of effusions: Dr Saima Saeed
4. Pneumothorax: (Indus hospital guidelines): Dr Mujahid Hussain
5. Tube thoracostomy; chest tube gone wrong: Dr Syed Ali Naqi
6. Post-procedural care (Dr. Nazish)
7. The ‘difficult’ chest tube (Dr. Sheeraz Siddiqui)
8. Radiology (CXR, U/S, CT scan) in pleural diseases: Dr Kashif Shazlee

Hands On:

1. Chest tube insertion and drain management: GS/Pulmonology
2. Ultrasound for pleural effusion: Radiology
3. Pleural biopsy with Abram’s needle: Pulmonology
