Dr. Saima Saeed Presents at Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco-Use 2023

Dr. Saima Saeed, Director of the Lung Health Program at Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), attended the 2023 Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco-Use Partner Meeting that took place on February 1-2, 2023, at Bloomberg headquarters in New York, USA. The partner meeting aimed to bring together all partners of the Bloomberg Philanthropies, such as Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK), Vital Strategies, International Union against TB and Lung Disease, and Centre for Disease Control, amongst others. Its objective was to celebrate successes and identify challenges in their common goal of curbing tobacco use worldwide through policy change, community advocacy, and exposing tobacco industry tactics. Hafiz Qazi Shafi Uddin was born in Bahawalpur and passed his intermediate education from his native village. This led to a crossroads in his life, as he was uncertain where to make his next step. His passion lay in the IT field, but he knew that he would require further education before being accepted into any organization. At the same time, he was a breadwinner for his family and could not neglect his responsibilities to his household. His family was supportive of his passion. Ali Raza was born and raised in Muzaffargarh with seven siblings. Coming from a modest background, his family struggled to make ends meet. His goal was to work hard and secure a respectable job that could help lift his family from poverty. However, it wasn’t an easy task. After receiving his last rejection letter, Raza realized that his shame of being in poverty was hindering his progression. Upon completing his intermediate education, he applied at several places, but the only positions he seemed to be getting were jobs requiring unskilled labor. He acknowledged the reality of the situation and was determined to work hard, boost his self-image, and earn the respect he demanded. The Martin Dow – Indus Hospital & Health Network Community Health Center is located on Baba Island on the outskirts of Karachi. The Community Health Center provides basic healthcare facilities to the people of the adjacent islands. Dr. Samra Zaidi is the resident doctor at the Martin Dow – Indus Hospital & Health Network Community Health Center who travels every day to the island to treat patients. There are no roads or proper transportation routes from Karachi to the island, so Dr. Samra and other Indus staff travel via boat five days a week to attend to the patients. Her accomplishments, technical savviness, and unmatched passion has already garnered her recognition from her peers and superiors, but her penchant for going above and beyond the call of duty to help her patients sets her apart from the rest.
