According to an estimate childhood cancers account for only about 1% of all cases. However, absence of nation-wide cancer data makes it impossible to find the actual number of children suffering with cancer. Due to the lack of treatment facilities, half of the children are unable to receive medical care. Experts revealed these facts at the Indus Hospital while celebrating the Childhood Cancer Survivors’ Day on November 25, 2017. Psychosocial Department of the Indus Hospital organized the event in collaboration with The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd.
The day was celebrated at Indus Hospital’s Korangi campus along with the Staff and Management of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd. The first part of the event had different activities to entertain children which included: magic show; puppet show; juggling show; Art competition; ring and racing game; poem & singing competition and a special Origami (Japanese paper art) session by Mr. Masato Kikuchi Deputy General Manager of the bank. During the event, survivors and their parents also shared their experiences to motivate the Current patients admitted at the Pediatric Complex.
“Cancer Survivors’ Day is the celebration of life after a great fight. The objective of this event is to create hope for those who have recently been diagnosed; to support their families; and a means of creating awareness among the community,” said Dr Abdul Bari Khan, CEO, Indus Health Network. Dr Bari further said, “The power for creating a better future for children with cancer, lies in each one of us. Our goal is to help all childhood cancer survivors to live happy and productive lives. The survivors can help new patients by showing their example.”
While addressing the event, Dr Shamvil Ashraf, Director Medical Services, IHN told, “Early diagnosis and right treatment lead to a better survival. The survival rate for childhood cancer in Pakistan is very dismal and the reason is late diagnosis and lack of awareness. Dr Ashraf further said, “The day is celebrated to honor the courage and strength of children with cancer, who at a very young age, have to go through a long, arduous and painful treatment journey.”
Mr. Hitoshi Kanahori, General Manager, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd addressed the survivors and their parents / guardian. He specially highlighted survivors and their parents/guardians courage, he said it is not an easy job to overcome emotions after detection of such disease and then fight with it, I simply salute the team efforts of these beautiful survivors and hope one day they all will become an instrumental part of this society. We must feel the importance of the every single day and Preciousness of life. Every day is an ongoing battle against cancer. In that sense, every day should be celebrated. He further added, “We are truly touched with Indus Hospital’s efforts in helping childhood cancer patients and together want to hold hands of these innocent fighters.”
The parents expressed their gratitude and thanked dedicated doctors, nursing staff and others, who untiringly served their children. In the concluding remarks participants urged that the community should work together to create lasting, positive changes in the lives of the children with cancer who are the future of our nation. The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd also donated a machine for the Pediatric Ward.
