The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus (TIH) has started an Emergency Medicine Training Program. The inauguration ceremony took place on July 2, 2018.
The program has been conducted in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). The objectives are to promote the development of Emergency Medicine (EM) as a specialty in Pakistan; providing EM training to physicians currently working in the Emergency Department of TIH; supporting the newly-founded formal EM Residency Program and fostering interest in and unifying support of EM throughout Pakistan.
The model is based on staffing the training program with rotating visiting international faculty –visiting from US, UK, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and South Africa – combined with local clinical supervision by TIH Emergency physicians and didactics from other local hospitals.
Zayed Yasin, MD, MBA, Department of Emergency Medicine, BWH, is the faculty lead while Megan Rybarczyk, MD, Emergency Medicine, BWH is the academic faculty lead, and Dr. Ghazanfar Saleem, Head of Department, Emergency Medicine, TIH is the Program Director.
The program has a one-year, two-part curriculum. One part of the curriculum is a clinical training program (CPEM-Clinical) that is open to up to 15 medical officers at TIH. These individuals will receive clinical mentorship while providing clinical care for the entire program. They will also participate in simulation exercises, procedure and ultrasound skills workshops, and case presentations that will be conducted with the weekly didactics. Trainees will be assessed with mid-term and final exams, as well as through clinical performance assessment by the faculty.
The second part of the curriculum consists of weekly conferences that include didactics, journal clubs, and feedback and review sessions (CPEM-Didactic) that will also be administered by international visiting faculty as well as local faculty. This curriculum is organized into 12 blocks, with each block consisting of a specific focus or topic, generally based on organ systems (i.e. Cardiovascular Block). This part of the curriculum will be completed by CPEM-C participants as well as up to 25 additional medical officers from TIH and doctors from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre; Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau, Civil Hospital Karachi; Abassi Shaheed Hospital; Patel Hospital, and Imam Clinic are also participating in the course.
