The Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) marked World Diabetes Day at its Korangi and QF, NST & SMP campuses with a walk and awareness sessions to raise awareness about the diseases and what people can do to prevent it.
The theme for this year’s World Diabetes Day is “Access to Diabetes Care”. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Pakistan ranks third in the prevalence of Diabetes in the world, with around 33 million people living with Diabetes in the country.
The Department of Diabetes & Endocrinology and Family Medicine jointly organized a walk, led by Dr. Abdul Bari, from the main gate of the Korangi Campus to the Bhitai gate then back to the main gate. Additionally, a blood sugar screening camp was held at a Family Medicine Clinic area for the general population. On the second day, an awareness session for patients was organized. The program was started with the recitation of Holy Quran by Dr. Asif Hafeez, Senior Specialist Diabetes. During the awareness session, doctors and experts talked about diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and management of the disease.
During the awareness talk, Dr. Nida Shamsi, Consultant & Head of Department, Family Medicine, Dr. Abdul Shakoor, Consultant & HoD Diabetes & Endocrinology, Dr. Saba Akhter, Diabetes Specialist, Dr. Ayesha Sarfaraz, Specialist, Family Medicine, Dr. Mahwish Fatima, Program Coordinator of Diabetes and Hypertension, and Misbah Kamran, Clinical Nutritionist spoke about the importance of World Diabetes Day, the prevalence of diabetes, how to live with it, use and myths of insulin and healthy diet. Healthy meal boxes were also distributed to the patients.
The Indus Hospital & Health Network’s Diabetes Management Program started in September 2014. Since its inception, more than 15,000 people have enrolled and received diabetes consultations and services. To facilitate patients to the maximum, the Diabetes Management Program was integrated with Family Medicine in October 2020. All Diabetes patients receive educational and nutritional counseling about the disease.

After successfully conducting the World Diabetes Day at Korangi and QF, NST & SMP campuses, the Department of Family Medicine and Diabetes jointly conducted a diabetes awareness session at the PIB campus. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Pakistan ranked third in the prevalence of diabetes globally, with around 33 million people living with diabetes in the country. Keeping the rising trend of diabetes globally in mind, awareness sessions were conducted. The program started with the Holy recitation by Mr. Abdullah. In awareness talk, Dr. Nida Shamsi, Dr. Ayesha Sarfaraz, Dr. Noushaba, Dr. Shabnam Rashid, Dr. Hina Shakeel, and Dr. Mahwish Fatima spoke about the rising trend and prevalence of diabetes, how to live with diabetes, use, and myths of insulin, and healthy diet. Also, a diabetes counselor was present to educate patients.
